Christianity places a great deal of importance on the Birth of Christ, and His Crucifixion and Resurrection, but most of us would not even be able to say what really happened around Ascension.
Some 40 days after His Resurrection Jesus met with His Disciples on the Mount of Olives, and “as they were looking on He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him out of their sight” (Acts 1:9). This is the extent of most of our knowledge.
But until Christ had returned to His Father and sat at His right hand, His mission had not been fully completed. The Early Church knew this and spoke of the Doctrine of the Ascension and the Glorification of Christ. These final events were essential to the completing of His Call here on earth. And are therefore essential for us.
If Christ had not ascended, there are many aspects of our Christian life today that would be ineffective. Because Christ ascended, we can say yes to the Great Commission, we can pray with confidence, we can live a transformed life in anticipation of His Return.
We are holding this workshop on Ascension Day. Pastors Peter Holmes and Susan Williams will be unpacking the unique mystery surrounding this final event in Christ’s human life and the significance it has for us all on a daily basis.
